See How Making Curved Corners Just Got Easier

See How Making Curved Corners Just Got Easier

Monday, April 16th, 2007

Lazies, I found a new tool I simply must have. I didn’t even realize I needed it until I saw a video demonstration and I had a light bulb moment.

This is my Sassy Bag design (pattern #108). All of the pieces for this bag design are rotary cut strips and pieces. That means straight lines and square corners. But I wanted rounded corners for the flap and body of the bag as shown below.

In order to round the corners, I needed to find a template with just the right curve. Then I had to accurately use the curve for a perfect finish for each of the four corners.

A Bounty Of Books And A Hemming Adventure

A Bounty Of Books And A Hemming Adventure

Tuesday, May 1st, 2007

Lazies, Two things today and a note.

Book Signing Bounty:
I posted on Monday that I’ll be signing books at Checker’s booth at the Quilt Market later this week. Well, I just saw the schedule for signings at Checker’s Newsletter and there is quite a line-up for book signings. And a special fabric signing by Darlene Zimmerman in addition to her new book ‘Quilting The Complete Guide’ shown here.

A Hemming Adventure:
I have to tell you about my sewing adventure last night. I needed to hem a pair of pants for my trip this week to Quilt Market in Salt Lake City. Now, I must tell you that I do not have a lot of experience in hemming pants - mine or anyone else’s. I’m 5′ 10″ and pants that are too long have been a rarity in my experience. I’ve hemmed pants for other people, but not many. I must tell you, I used to make most of my clothes - everything from suits and dresses to pants shorts, shirts and more. So, I no stranger to apparel sewing.

Let me walk through each of the segments and tell you more.

dvd-image-clip.jpg‘No-Fear’ Zipper Demo
This zipper technique is one of my most popular trade secrets for installing a zipper. This was the first ‘cheat’ I came up with for putting in a zipper. (I have four zipper ‘cheats’ but now I respectfully call them ‘techniques’.) The ‘No-Fear’ zipper technique is used in the Towne Purse, My Favorite Duffle Bag, Take Along Bags, Chelsea Tote and the City Bag. Learn the technique once, use it again and again.

‘Sew Easy’ Zipper Demo
This segment walks through the whole Runaround Bag project and we go step-by-step through installing a zipper the ‘Sew Easy’ way. The ‘Sew Easy’ zipper technique is absolutely one of my very favorite myth-busters - that zippers are scary, hard, and a mystery. This is a great technique to get your feet wet and move past your zipper apprehensions. The ‘Sew Easy’ zipper technique is used in the Perfect Pouches pattern, too.

Embellish With Ribbons
Like many of our designs, the Katy Bags design is perfect for embellishing. In this segment we use a deceptively easy method to create a sophisticated scrappy surface treatment. Use this technique over and over again with a different result every time. This technique was created by my friend Cecile McPeak of Just Another Button Company. Great for using scraps, fibers, fusibles and buttons. I wrote about this technique here.

dvd-image-clip-3.jpgSturdy Shoulder Strap
Need a great all-purpose method for making a shoulder strap for your bag? I love this double-padded, comfy strap from our City Bag pattern for use with any large work bag. Use this fool-proof method to create a strap in any width or length.

Cutting Oversized Pieces
Many of our projects use large rotary cut pieces. In traditional cutting, (where the strip you are cutting is under the ruler), you have to combine rulers to cut for the dimension needed for large pieces. That can be cumbersome and not very Lazy. In this segment, I show you how I easily cut large pieces according to the measurements on the cutting mat. Ruler measuring is certainly more accurate than mat measuring. No question about it. However, our projects do not require the same precision as quilt piecing. Therefore, mat measuring and cutting is perfect for the large simple pieces needed for our designs. I also show a quick fold-n-press technique used to center pieces. I demonstrate this technique using layers of a bag project, but you can use it to center the layers of a quilt.

dvd-image-clip-2.jpgMock Felted Purse
See how easy it is to achieve a felted bag look without knowing anything about felting. Combine your love of knit or crochet with a little bit of sewing to see one of my most popular embellishment techniques come alive on our Chloe Handbag. Don’t feel like creating a knit or crochet piece of your own? Use an old thin sweater or other garment. Great for use on projects that can accommodate a slightly thicker ‘fabric’. I wrote about this technique here.

Tips For Turning
Lots of our designs are constructed by sewing fabrics right sides together and then turning through an opening at a seam. When you turn things right sides out, the seam areas want to buckle in toward the project and the opening could use some tender loving care to make it look nice before being sewn closed. Well, I have an absolutely killer tip for getting that opening to look perfect after turning things right sides out. It’s juicy-good, I assure you. I also share my tips for addressing the buckling issue, turning/pressing a perfect tube, turning corners well and pressing a finished bag. Demonstrations use parts and pieces of the Gracie Handbag, Summer Tote, City Bag and Chelsea Tote.

Some comments about ‘Tips’:

‘I just love it, what great tips. I don’t get Kaye here unless I use the Internet to catch stuff here & there. I have never seen any of these tips. So many people are aways asking about the little tips. I never knew about the crochet bag (very, very cool, gotta do it!) & the folding of the pocket before turning inside out, never thought of that, smacked myself in the head!’
- Penny from The Cotton Vault

‘I liked it. I learned from it. I really appreciated the Tips for Turning. I think ‘Tips’ is a good solid piece of work that will help out a LOT of people. It’s evident how much time and effort you’ve put into thinking about your craft and your end users.’
- Julie from PA

‘I love seeing two zipper techniques demonstrated! And the surface embellishment tips can be used on lots of projects. I like having all of this information in one place.
- Carolyn in WY

‘I love the ‘Tips’ segments. Yesterday I put together a simple quilted panel for Quilt Market. Twice I was reminded of the DVD. I used Warm and White cotton batting, and relished how I can smooth the fabric in place and it will stay. This way I needed so many fewer pins for basting and everything stayed put during free motion quilting. I also used the “fold in quarters and crease to find the center” tip to line up the top, batting and backing of my panel. That is so much faster than measuring, especially when close enough is good enough. When I was watching the DVD you talked about both those things, but I didn’t have an “Aha!” moment, as they weren’t new to me. But as I used them yesterday I thought about how useful both things were, especially for an inexperienced sewer, but also for me, an infrequent sewer. I’m not so sure I would have remembered to use the techniques if I hadn’t just watched the DVD. It was a nice reminder. The tips show you as creative and innovative, and all the bags look like “must do” projects. I’m flattered that you liked my ’stripping’ technique enough to inspire the ‘Embellish With Ribbons’ segment!’
- Cecile from Just Another Button Company

Thanks, Joan, for sending me a preview copy of the ‘Tips” DVD to see how I could use it in my quilt shop. We demonstrate your bag and purse patterns in the store for our customers.

I finally got a moment to watch it. I thought that I knew everything about the world of lazy! The DVD is great. Our customers will be able to see much more detail than we can give in a quick demo. I am sure we will sell many of these to people who want to take you home!

I am stopping today to pick up one of those portable DVD players. You will be playing in our “Lazy” Bag Boutique!
- Janet Lutz, Calico Gals Quilt Shop

Watch the DVD on your computer or your TV. Simply select a segment from the title menu. Each segment is filled to the brim with my running commentary as I describe what I’m doing, why I’m doing it, and how you can use it. And since these are segments from Kaye’s show, you get a hearty helping of me with a nice side of Kaye in each tip.

And last, and certainly least, the case is cute. In fact, it’s a quarter inch of cuteness. The standard DVD cases are 1/2″ thick, the case for the Tips DVD is a ’slimline’ case that’s 1/4″ thick. I think that makes it a measuring tool, don’t you? If you’re ever in a pinch for a quarter of an inch…grab your ’Tips’ case/measuring guide. Yes, I know that’s a stretch.

Availability:
‘Tips’ is available now, but it’s so new that it’s not in stock at most places yet. Contact your local quilt store and let them know you’d like to get one. Suggested Retail: $24.95, item #LGD904

Notes:
- Running time approx. 53 minutes.
- Each feature on the ‘Tips’ DVD is shown using sewing and quilting patterns from Lazy Girl Designs.
- ‘Tips’ DVD does not include any patterns or project instructions.
- ‘Tips’ DVD is for informational and entertainment purposes only.
- Segments as featured on ‘Kaye’s Quilting Friends’.
- DVD package/case: 5 3/8″ W x 7 1/2″ H x 1/4″ D

If Sewing is Your New Passion, Then Quilt Shops Should Be Your New Girlfriend

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

Lazies, Apparently our not-so-secret love of sewing is gaining more media coverage. Just this morning NBC’s Today Show aired a piece about sewing circles. Click on the image below to watch the clip.

Today Show story

If you are new to sewing, then I have a secret to share with you. Are you interested in purse patterns to make your own fabulous handbag, pocketbook, clutch or tote? Want to embellish ready-made garments for a personal touch? Care to create a jacket to die for? Or do you want to try your hand at an apron, skirt, or items to decorate your home? Or are you competing in your own personal Project Runway?

Lakehouse Fabrics limeWell, if sewing is your new passion, then quilt shops should be your new girlfriend with whom you share that passion. So please allow me to take this opportunity to introduce you to the girlfriend with the old-fashioned name who is waiting to make your acquaintance.

Your average fabulous quilt shop is probably nearby waiting to meet you. There are approximately 3,000+ in the US. That’s twice the total number of JoAnn’s and Hancock’s for those of you keeping score. The chain stores are great, however the quilt shops are specialty stores dedicated to your love of fabric crafting.

And when you walk in the door, and your fabric-loving knees begin to buckle at the sight of 1,000 - 9,000 bolts of the most beautiful high grade cottons, fabulous fleece, Minkie, flannels, and home dec fabrics that you could ever hope to play with - well, you should probably sit down for a minute and take it all in.

Pull a chair up to the bound-to-be-there fat quarter cuts and rifle through the pretty colors like a box of mixed chocolates as you regain your composure. Then, take a nice relaxing breath, get up and walk through the store fondling the bolts. It’s okay. That’s what we do as quilt shop customers. We have to experience the fabric in our minds and at our fingertips.

Lakehouse Fabrics multiYour new girlfriend, the quilt shop, is almost assuredly owned by someone just like you who has a passion for creating things from beautiful fabrics. That shop owner hand selects every item in the store with you in mind. It’s like being invited into the most wonderful personal sewing room you could ever hope to go play in. Your girlfriend has the best notions and tools, too. Still cutting with scissors? Oh my. Cut at the speed of light with a rotary cutter and get to the sewing part faster than ever.

My love of quilt shops began after being a sewist for more than 20 years. No one in my family and none of my friends quilted. So for me, quilt shops were not on my radar. A friend introduced me and I’ve been hooked ever since.

So, I’m sharing my girlfriends with you today. And I hope some of them become your friends, too. When you see the word ‘quilt’, I want you to think high grade, upscale, specialty fabrics, designed by people like you and me, waiting to decorate your life for a lifetime.

So, if you haven’t been to one of these 3,000+ independently owned quilt fabric shops in the US - go find one here or here. Trust me, it’s worth a visit. Bring a big car and your credit card, meet the shop owner and staff, sign up for the newsletter, take a class and bookmark their website.

A big ‘Thanks’ to my friend Wendy Thompson, Associate Editor, CK Media (Sew News and Sew Simple magazines), for the NBC news source.

Meet Our Newest Lazy Girl - Cheryl Johnson!

Friday, January 12th, 2007

Lazies, Earlier this week, I issued a Lazy challenge to my friend Cheryl Johnson at Leisure Arts. I found out that Cheryl had never made a bag or purse.

Cheryl Johnson Mod BagAfter I picked myself up off of the floor, I decided that I needed to correct Cheryl’s misguided crafting and I aimed my sights squarely on her jugular with a public challenge. It was a simple challenge to create one of my designs.

Cheryl rose to the challenge and posted her conquest on her blog yesterday - Good girl Cheryl, I mean Good Lazy Girl!

Let me set the stage for Cheryl’s frightening transformation to becoming a Lazy Girl:
It was a dark, cold, rainy night and Cheryl’s spiffy new sewing machine was taunting her from the other room. With the echo of my challenge circling her psyche, Cheryl could not resist the call of the Mod Bag. I had her right where I wanted her….

Here’s Cheryl:
“OK…so here’s my response to Joan’s challenge. My Mod Bag, complete with a zipper. My only added rule was that I would use only stuff on hand…except for the zipper. I did have to buy one of those. Nearly completed in one evening. I think I need to add a ring with some fun embellishments from one of the handle tabs, but I have to get the embellishments (beads, ribbons, something else to add interest up there in all that black).

It’s Easy To Install A Zipper With Our Runaround Bag Design

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007

Lazies, I don’t know who came up with the universal instructions to install a zipper, but I rarely hear some one say ‘I love installing zippers’. Actually, I don’t think I’ve ever heard that. And I can’t help but feel it’s because of those old-fashioned, scary instructions that come with the zipper. Well, it just doesn’t have to be that way. I have grown to love installing zippers and I think you can, too.

I have devised four different ways to install a zipper that won’t make you cry. I promise. These techniques are used throughout our designs. Which brings us to today’s ‘Show Us Your Lazy’ project feature. Lazy Girl Michelle Meehan tells us how she feels about our ‘Sew Easy’ zipper technique used to make her Runaround Bag (shown below with a Wonder Wallet).

5 Easy Steps To Make a Mock Felted Purse

Monday, December 4th, 2006

Lazies, I love the look of felted bags, don’t you? But, honestly, the whole ‘make it big then shrink it’ concept leaves me feeling like there is some magic formula or expertise I must have in order to do it right. I’m sure that making a felted bag is easy, but it intimidates me. So, here is my quick and easy Lazy Girl way to make a yarn covered bag without knowing anything about felting.

Mohair Yarn covered Chloe Handbag

To make a Lazy ‘felted’ bag, follow these simple steps to combine crocheting or knitting along with sewing to make what appears to be a purse constructed of yarn.

1) Find a fabric bag style or design you want to make. Simple is better in order to showcase the yarn. This sample uses our Chloe Handbag pattern. The cover is one rectangular piece that wraps from the front of the bag, across the bottom and back up the other side.
